Playing Out of the Chop Chord

Playing Out of the Chop Chord is a mandolin workshop designed to help you unlock one of the most powerful tools hiding in plain sight: the chop chord. Rather than thinking of the chop chord as only a rhythm shape, we’ll explore how it can become a map for melody, improvisation, double stops, closed-position playing, and moving confidently up the neck. You’ll learn how to see chord tones inside familiar chop shapes, connect them to nearby scale notes, and begin turning those shapes into tasteful licks, fills, and breaks.
 
This workshop is great for players who want to feel less stuck in open position and more fluent across the fingerboard. We’ll look at practical ways to use the chop chord as a home base for finding notes, building phrases, and understanding how melody and harmony work together in bluegrass mandolin.
